Emily: I wasn't accusing you of anything, Nikolas. I'm just trying to understand. Alexis said that you threw a glass at her --
Nikolas: My God, I'm not going to say it again! I did not throw a glass at her, and if you don't believe me, just say it! Call me a liar to my face!
Emily: Why are you screaming at me?
Nikolas: I apologize. I shouldn't have snapped at you like that.
Emily: You didn't snap, Nikolas, you were yelling at me. What I can't understand is why. All I said is that you've been on edge lately, and then you go off for no reason. It's not like you to lose control like this. What is going on?
Nikolas: Uh -- I think it's maybe Lulu. I -- I think I've just been a little more worried about her than I originally realized. I've just been trying to keep it all in, and, unfortunately, you and -- and Alexis showed up when all that frustration boiled over. I -- I apologize if you were on the receiving end of that.
Emily: Okay, uh, you know what? I'm sorry. I -- I should've told you sooner. Nikolas, Elizabeth got a call from Lulu while we were at work, saying that she was stranded at some barn on county road 91 last night.
Nikolas: Is she -- is she all right?
Emily: Yeah, she just needed a ride. Elizabeth went to pick her up.
Nikolas: Oh, God. Well -- well, thank God.
Emily: I know.
Nikolas: I was so -- so worried.
Nikolas: With Luke out of town, it's my responsibility to look after Lulu. And I was too damn preoccupied with my work to see she was about to get her heart broken.
Emily sighs.
Emily: Nikolas, we all tried to warn Lulu that Logan was trouble. I mean, Tracy even went as far as forbidding her to see him.
Nikolas: Yeah, which I'm sure only drove her into Logan’s arms even faster.
Emily: Look, I know it's hard for you to accept that your little sister is getting older now, and she can make her own decisions.
Nikolas: Yeah, well, that's -- that's what concerns me the most. She's impulsive. She never stops and thinks things through. She just -- she just follows her heart, no matter where it leads her.
Emily: That's not always a bad thing. If I hadn't followed mine, we would never be back together.
Nikolas: It still caused us a lot of pain. And I don't want Lulu to experience that any more than she already has.
Emily: Nikolas, you're a good brother to her. But you can't protect Lulu forever. You've got to let her live her own life, make her own mistakes. If you don't, she's never going to find happiness.
Nikolas: Hey, I know you're right. I'm still worried about her.
Emily: Well, Lulu's only been gone for a few hours. You've been losing your temper and lashing out --
Nikolas sighs.
Emily: For weeks. Nikolas --
Nikolas: What?
Emily: Something is bothering you. What is it?
Emily: You haven’t been yourself lately, Nikolas. It's like you're hiding something from me.
Nikolas: Ugh.
Emily: Is it Jerry?
Nikolas: No.
Emily: Is he threatening you again?
Nikolas: No, I wouldn't keep that from you.
Emily: But you are keeping something from me. We live together. Do you think that I don't notice when you hang up the phone every time I walk in the room? When you disappear for hours on end with no explanation? What is going on with you?
Nikolas: There is something that I'm working on that I would love to share with you, but can't -- not yet, okay?
Emily: Why not?
Footsteps approach.
Lucky: I'm glad you're both home. I wanted to be the first to tell you.
Nikolas: What?
Lucky: Elizabeth and I decided to get a divorce.
Lucky: You know, when I was in rehab, there was a special church service for people getting discharged from the program. They stand up with their families and make a promise to live a better life. And even though things weren't in the best place between Elizabeth and I, she still -- she still showed up and supported me.
Nikolas: Of course she did, Lucky. It's because she loves you.
Lucky: No, Elizabeth felt obligated, like she felt obligated to make our marriage work. But it hadn't, it just -- it hadn't for a long time. If you're going to tell me that I'm making a big mistake by not fighting for Elizabeth, you know what? Don't even -- just don't, okay? Because there's -- there's nothing more to fight --
Nikolas: It's okay. Come here. It's all right, brother. You're going to be all right.
Knock on door.
Emily: Hey.
Elizabeth: Hey.
Emily: I saw Lucky. He told me the news. Are you okay?
Elizabeth: Our marriage has been over for a while.
Emily sighs.
Emily: Doesn't make it any easier. Are you sure this is what you want?
Elizabeth: It's just better we end things now before the boys understand what divorce really means. I want to make this as easy as possible for them.
Emily: And what about you?
Elizabeth: I'll be fine.
Emily sighs.
Emily: You shouldn't have to do this alone, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth: I have my gram. She'll be glad to help.
Emily: So would Jason.
Elizabeth: He's not an option.
Emily: Why not? You know he would do anything for you, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth: You know, I haven't been secretly sabotaging my marriage in hopes that someday I could be with Jason.
Emily: No, you've been trying to do what's right for everyone else and making yourself miserable in the process. You deserve to be happy, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth: And I would be happy with Jason.
Emily sighs.
Elizabeth: Until the first time my children were threatened. Until I asked myself if I was risking their happiness, their lives, to have what I want. And then I would be miserable, and I would hate myself. And I might even end up hating Jason, and I don't want to do that.
Footsteps approach.
Emily: How's Lucky?
Nikolas: Well, Elizabeth was the love of his life.
Emily: Yeah.
Nikolas: And now it's over. And he knows that the divorce is for the better, but that certainly doesn't make it any easier to let go.
Emily: I know how much you wanted them to work things out.
Nikolas: Yeah. Well, I can't force Lucky to stay with Elizabeth, just like I can't tell Lulu to keep away from Logan Hayes.
Nikolas chuckles.
Emily: It's frustrating, isn't it?
Nikolas: Yeah.
Emily: Seeing the people you love in so much pain, not being able to do anything about it.
Nikolas: Mm-hmm. How's Elizabeth?
Emily: She knew it was time.
Nikolas: Hmm.
Emily: You know, things have been over for a while, and no matter what they did, they just couldn't save the relationship.
Nikolas: I know. And I thank God every day that we saved ours.
Emily: We were given another chance.
Nikolas: Mm-hmm.
Emily: And I am never giving it up.
Nikolas: Mm-hmm.
Emily: Hmm.
