Emily: Hi.
Alexis: Any luck?
Emily: Pediatrics was having a Halloween party.
Alexis: Oh, yes!
Emily giggles.
Alexis: Yes! Thank you. Thank you. You have no idea how much I wanted these.
Emily: Okay, if anyone asks, it didn't come from me.
Alexis: I promise I won't tell anyone. These are the only things that don't taste like tree bark, and once I start the chemo again, I won't be able to keep them down. Mmm. Mmm!
Emily laughs.
Alexis: What are your plans tonight?
Emily: You know, it's been a long day, so I think I'm just going to head on home.
Alexis: You should call Nikolas. Spoon Island doesn't have many Halloween trick-or-treaters -- in fact, they don't have any. And what better place to spend Halloween then at Wyndemere? So you can go in and cuddle up with Nikolas in front of a fire, and he can tell you real-life horror stories about his family.
Nikolas: I'm more than capable of scaring up my own date, thank you.
Alexis: Did you come all the way over here to remind me to mind my business?
Nikolas: And to give you this.
Alexis: Oh! I love caramel toffee crunch! Where'd you find this?
Nikolas: Barrows and Sharp in London, of course. I had it shipped in.
Alexis: You are such an amazing man. Isn't he an amazing man?
Emily: No arguments here.
Alexis: Oh. Surely the two of you have something else you'd like to do on Halloween than sit here and watch me eat this?
Phone rings.
Emily: I -- Alexis, I'm so sorry. I have to take this. Um -- try not to eat all of that tonight.
Alexis: I can't make any promises.
Emily laughs.
Emily: Okay.
Alexis: Okay.
Emily: I'll see you later.
Nikolas: Yeah. Happy Halloween.
Emily: Okay.
Alexis: "Happy Halloween"? You're a prince. That's the best you can do?
Nikolas: You know, there was a time in your life when you at least made an attempt to be subtle.
Alexis: Subtlety is a luxury that I no longer have. Do you love her?
Nikolas: I always will, yes. You know that.
Alexis: Then what are you waiting for?
Nikolas: Excuse me?
Alexis: Go! Tell her. And hurry up before she gets away.
Nikolas: Why -- why are you suddenly so eager to push Emily and I together? What --
Alexis: Because I want you to be happy, and I know that she makes you happy. She is the one person that can give you the kind of happiness and the kind of life that you deserve.
Nikolas: No, no, no, no, no, it's more than that. You see Emily and I as a backup for Kristina and Molly, don't you?
Alexis: Now that you mention it, you and Emily are the only two sane people in Port Charles that are capable of taking care of my girls. Because if either father gets custody, Ric will not let Molly near Kristina just out of spite, and Sonny's going to allow Carly to turn Kristina into a -- into an empty-headed, boy-crazed cheerleader.
Nikolas: What? Okay, I know that you want Kristina and Molly to stay together. But Emily and I are just not an option.
Alexis: Why not?
Nikolas: Because we're not together. Okay? And you can't rush us into a reunion that neither of us are ready for.
Alexis: Why not? You know that I'm doing this for my own selfish purposes, but you and Emily can provide them with a -- with a life that's filled with love and respect, and you are the two people that I love and respect.
Nikolas: First of all, I refuse to consider that you will not be around to raise Kristina and Molly yourself, okay?
Alexis: I just need to know that my girls are going to be taken care of.
Nikolas: Whatever happens or doesn't happen with Emily, it has to be about us, okay? For all the love we had, we hurt each other badly, and I will -- I will not put our hearts on the line until I -- I am sure that she feels safe with me.
Emily: Okay -- oops --
Jason: Oh, here, let me help -- let me help you.
Emily: Thanks.
Jason: I got it.
Emily: I brought everything you could possibly need.
Jason: Oh, thank you so much for doing this.
Emily: Yeah.
Jason: I had no idea what to get. I just wanted to make this a night so perfect for Sam. Thank you.
Emily: Wait, you're doing this for Sam?
Jason: Uh -- yeah. Why?
Emily: When you said that you wanted stuff for a special night, I thought that you were planning a Halloween party for Michael and Morgan.
Jason: Oh.
Emily: No. Seriously, this is probably not what you had in mind.
Jason: Uh -- no, not really. This isn't what --
Emily: Okay, don't worry, don't worry, don't worry. All right, I'm going to take care of this.
Jason: Okay, how?
Emily: Yeah.
Jason: How are you -- how?
Emily: I -- I don't know. I'll take care of the decorations, you handle the romance. If your heart's in it, then Sam’s going to love everything about tonight. Look, Jase, I know how hard it is when someone you love hurts you. But if you can get past what happened, then there's a whole lot of good waiting for you on the other side.
Emily: When Nikolas and I fell apart, all I wanted was something to dull the pain inside of me. So I -- I threw myself into my studies and I threw myself into work and, finally, I turned to Sonny.
Jason: Do you regret it?
Emily: No. What Sonny and I had was -- was real. It just came around at the wrong time. I think something similar happened with you and Elizabeth.
Jason: Yeah, we were just, you know, friends who helped each other out, that's all.
Emily: You know, I understand turning to someone for comfort and consolation. But if we're lucky, we find our way back to the people we were meant to be with. It may take time, but eventually we learn to trust our instincts and our hearts. Then the illusions are gone and we're left with that one person who we can't stop loving.
Door opens.
Emily: Alexis?
Alexis sighs.
Emily: Hey, I can come back if this is a bad time.
Alexis: No. Please, don't let me scare you off twice in one night.
Emily: You didn't scare me off earlier.
Alexis sighs.
Emily: Is there anything I can do?
Alexis: You can remind me that crying is self-indulgent and counterproductive.
Emily: You know, when I had cancer, there wasn't a day I didn't cry, Alexis. I put on a happy face for visitors, but the minute they were gone, I'd break down. I had to release what I was feeling, and so do you.
Alexis: Jax and Carly came by before they went trick-or-treating with -- with the girls.
Emily: Yeah? Can I see?
Alexis: Yeah.
Emily: Aw. They look adorable.
Alexis: Carly dressed her up like a cheerleader.
Emily: Alexis -- you feel like you're missing out, huh?
Alexis: It was Molly's first Halloween and I wanted to be there. And it's just one of the firsts that I'm going to miss.
Emily: There are going to be so many other firsts for Molly -- her first words, first kiss, first love. Don't focus on the ones you've already missed. You fight, Alexis. You fight to be here for the ones that are still to come.
Alexis: I want you to do me a favor.
Emily: Okay. Anything.
Alexis: Take this to Nikolas --
Emily: Mm-hmm?
Alexis: And tell him that I'm not going to need that backup plan after all. He'll know what I mean.
Emily: Okay. I'll take care of it.
Alexis: Do me another favor? Take care of my nephew, because he really needs someone like you in his life.
Emily: And I -- I care about Nikolas, but I don't expect him to let his guard down until he feels safe with me again.
Emily: Alfred thought I might find you here.
Nikolas: Oh -- did he call you?
Emily laughs.
Emily: No, no. I -- uh -- came by on my own. Um -- Alexis wanted me to give you this. Jax and Carly stopped by with the girls on their way to trick-or-treating.
Nikolas: They dressed her up like a cheerleader. Well, I bet that went over really well.
Emily: Yeah. Actually, that -- that photo comes with a message. Alexis wanted me to tell you that she won't be needing backup after all? Do you --
Nikolas: Oh.
Emily: Do you know what that means?
Nikolas: Huh. Yes. Um -- she's been pushing for us to be together because she wants us to bring up the girls -- if anything should happen to her.
Emily: What did you say?
Nikolas: Well, I just said that whatever happens, it should be about us.
Emily: That call I got at the hospital was from Jason.
Nikolas: Yeah? Is everything all right?
Emily: He wanted me to set up a romantic evening for him and Sam.
Nikolas: They're going to work things out?
Emily: Yeah, well, Jason wants to try, but I -- I think it's going to take a long time before they get past what happened.
Nikolas: Well, you know, time does have a way of healing old wounds, right? I mean, look at us.
Emily: Yeah. We caused each other a lot of pain, but we managed to find a way to a better place.
Nikolas: Mm-hmm. Well, I don't think it's that difficult if the love is still there.
Wind blows.
Emily: Oh -- what was that? No, really.
Nikolas: It's -- it's just the wind blowing through the caves down there. It's nothing to be afraid of.
Emily: I always feel safe when I'm with you.
