Emily's Voice: Nikolas?
Emily: Nikolas?
Nikolas: Hmm?
Emily: Are you okay?
Nikolas: Oh, man. I was dreaming.
Emily: You have that conference call this morning.
Nikolas: What? Oh, my God, in an hour. I can't -- I can't believe it's that late.
Emily: Well, I hated waking you up.
Nikolas: No. Thank you. Thank you. I have to review that Asian prospectus.
Emily: You must be exhausted. Nikolas, I'm not surprised you slept in. I got home late and you still weren't here. I fell asleep waiting.
Nikolas: Oh, yeah, I guess it was pretty late.
Emily: So? Are you going to tell me where you were?
Nikolas: I'm sorry, I should have -- I should have called. I just -- I lost track of time, I guess. You know, I went for a walk and --
Emily: On the East riding trail like you wanted?
Nikolas: No, no, actually, in town.
Emily: Oh. Yeah, I should have stayed with you, but we've been so swamped at the hospital.
Nikolas: It's okay, it's okay.
Emily: You were thinking about us, weren't you? You were blaming yourself and wanting to make everything right.
Nikolas: Oh, you know me too well.
Emily: Nikolas, I know that you're hurting, and it's clearly my fault, and I want to apologize for --
Nikolas: No, please don't -- don't apologize, okay? I don't blame you for the way that I feel or any way that I've been acting, okay?
Emily: Well, all you wanted to do was go for a walk and then come back here and hang out.
Nikolas: I know, but if you had to work, you had to work.
Emily: I've been really difficult lately.
Nikolas: Well, listen, we've both been through terrible things, okay? You're just doing the best you can to deal with it.
Emily: And so are you.
Nikolas: I don't -- I don't fault you for -- for anything, okay? In fact, I -- I regret everything that's happened and I said and everything that I've done and --
Emily: Well, if I can't apologize, you can't regret. Okay? Just know that through everything, I've never stopped loving you. And I never will.
A conversation in bed happened between Courtney and Jax, when Jax left the bed, Courtney's cell phone rings. She leans over and picks it up.
Courtney: Ahem. Hello.
Nikolas: I have to see you.
Courtney: Hey. I'm glad you called.
Nikolas: Yeah -- excuse me -- ahem. I apologize for expecting you to meet me up here. It's --
Courtney: No, no, it's okay.
Nikolas: Tawdry a bit.
Courtney: No, it -- look, I don't want to -- I don't want to draw a lot of attention, and I'm sure you don't, either. You know -- about last night.
Nikolas: Yeah, yeah, that's actually why -- why I called you.
Courtney: Oh, yeah. Obviously, right? Anyway -- look, I've obviously been -- I guess I've misled you about a lot of things lately, and I'm sorry. I really like you as a friend.
Nikolas: Yeah.
Courtney: I do, I mean --
Nikolas: I never meant to kiss you, okay? And it just can't happen again.
Emily: Hey,Jax?
Jax: Hey.
Emily: Do you mind if I launch straight into something that's absolutely none of my business?
Jax: No, not at all.
Emily: Okay, feel free to tell me to back off.
Jax: I will just jump right in there.
Emily: Okay, this whole surrogacy arrangement is very difficult for Lucky, as you must know. For Elizabeth to carry your child to pay for Lucky's medical bills -- it hurts his pride.
Jax: Yeah, yeah, I got that.
Emily: Okay, and it's great that you're gallant and charming and generous, and Elizabeth would really love those flowers, but Lucky -- gas on a bonfire.
Jax: Oh, yeah. Right. They're not for Elizabeth. They're for my wife. Courtney's having a meeting here at the hospital.
Emily: Oh.
Jax: Yeah.
Nikolas: I was in pretty bad shape last night and had way too much to drink and --
Courtney: Maybe that's why you felt dead inside.
Nikolas: I'm sure it was.
Courtney: And that's what alcohol does, right? You know, it takes the edge off?
Nikolas: Yeah.
Courtney: Kills feelings?
Nikolas: Yeah. In any case, it's just I overstepped, and kissing you was a huge mistake and --
Courtney: I agree.
Nikolas: I am profoundly sorry for that.
Courtney: Look, I -- I mean, Nikolas, I kissed you back. I'm sorry, too. Anyway, I just -- God. Lately, it's been easier to talk to you than to talk to my own husband.
Nikolas: Yeah, I kind of feel the same way.
Courtney: I mean, I really -- I really enjoy our connection.
Nikolas: So do I.
Courtney: But, you know, we can't -- you know.
Nikolas: Yeah, I know. Yeah, we can't keep this up. It's --
Courtney: Well, I was going to say "do it again."
Nikolas: "Keep it up," "do it again" -- same difference.
Courtney: Right. Look, I've obviously been sending you mixed signals all along, and I apologize.
Nikolas: I apologize to you, as well.
Courtney: You know, I do love Jax. I do. I mean, we're starting a family. And even if I'm not carrying a child, I'm grateful, I'm glad. So I need to stop leaning on you.
Nikolas: And I on you. I mean, I love Emily, too, and I want our marriage to work. It will work. I'll make it work. So I regret any pain or trouble or whatever that I may have caused you.
Courtney: No, no, you didn't. No.
Nikolas: Yeah, well, I mean, I think I kind of ruined what could have been a good friendship.
Courtney: Yeah, I guess -- I guess the timing is just -- is all wrong.
Nikolas: Yes. Yeah, it sure is.
Courtney: I mean --
Thunder.
Courtney: Anyway, I guess -- I guess this is the last time we're going to be meeting like this, so --
Nikolas: Yeah, I understand. It's fine.
Courtney: I mean, it's not that I don't like you. You know, I mean -- whew. I guess it's just that I like you too much. I'a going to go.
Nikolas: Hey -- I like you too much, too.
Courtney: Okay. Bye. Oh -- oh!
Thunder.
Courtney: Oh, God!
Jax: This may sound strange, but I believe that Courtney and I were meant to be parents. The first time we really noticed each other was the night I found out that Sam's baby wasn't mine, and she understood my sense of loss, as irrational as it was. I mean, her experience of losing a child was much greater than mine ever was. But that's one of the reasons I asked her to go to monte carlo with me -- so we could both forget.
Emily: Mm-hmm. And you ended up falling completely in love.
Jax: The children we lost brought us together, and now we have a chance to have one of our own.
Emily: So then it has to be fate.
Jax: Another believer.
Emily: True believer. You know, sometimes two people are just meant to fall in love and events conspire to make it happen.
Nikolas: I was so beat up last night I forgot to charge my cell phone.
Courtney: Oh, I left mine at home. Oh, God, I'm such an idiot.
Nikolas: No, you're not. It's my fault. I should have never asked you to come up here.
Courtney: It's okay.
Nikolas: I'm late for a conference call, though. Someone might come up here looking for me.
Courtney: Up on a hospital roof?
Nikolas: Or not.
Courtney: We can always pray.
Nikolas: Yeah, or we can just wait for it to stop raining and start yelling.
Courtney: Oh.
Nikolas: Oh, you're freezing. Here, let me --
Courtney: No, no, no, no, you need it. No, I'm all right, really.
Nikolas: No, I don't need it as bad as you do. Here, come here.
Courtney: Thanks.
Nikolas: There you go.
