Monica: It's better that you didn't know I was gone. Oh, my God.

Emily: Mom? How's Dad?

Monica: Uh, he's -- he's resting comfortably. Are you okay?

Emily: Yeah. I just got this terrible feeling that something bad had happened and I ran back down to check on Dad.

Monica: No, there's been no change. Listen, would you like to go and get something in the cafeteria?

Emily: No, you go ahead, Mom. I want to take this shift and sit with Dad for a couple of minutes.

Emily: You remember when I first came to live with you? My mother had just died and I missed her so much. But you made me feel at home, Dd. You bought me clothes. Whatever I wanted. And when you saw that I was sad, you pretended to be a silly bear. And you sang me show tunes until I felt better.

Monica: Any change?

Emily: Yeah. He's resting, which is probably the best thing.

Pager beeps.

Monica: Oh. It's A.J.

Sam: All right, there's nothing more they can do for you tonight, so I just want to get you home --

Jason: Okay.

Sam: And take care of you.

Monica: A.J. Has taken a turn for the worse. Emily and I are going to go see him.

Sam: Well, you don't seem surprised.

Jason: Look, I'm not surprised that A.J.s in trouble.

Sam: Whatever you did, I am going to protect you.

Jason: Sam --

Sam: I will give you an alibi. I will be --

Jason: When someone does what A.J. did -- hurt that many people, cause that much pain -- the damage comes back to bite them sooner or later. That's what I always figured would happen to A.J.

Emily: A.J.'s dead.

Emily: A.J. had been gone for so long that I didn't believe that I was ever going to see him again. And when I did, he shot our father in the back. But I'm going to try to forget that and all of the other awful things that A.J. did, and I'm just going to try to remember the way that he was when he was a kid. He was helpful, he was funny -- my big brother. Jase, thank God you're okay.

Sam: Jason? Jason? Do you want to go after her?

Jason: No, no, she'll come by or she'll call me if she needs me.

Sam: Look, A.J. was your brother, too. Do you want to talk about it? Is there anything that I can do?

Jason: You know what? I actually used to feel sorry for A.J. Nothing ever went right for him. But not after what he did to Michael.

Alan: Hey.

Emily: Hey.

Alan: Why are you wasting your time looking at me?

Emily: I'm not wasting my time, Dad. I'm happy to do it.

Alan: Is your mother with A.J.? How's he doing?

Emily: Dad, are you thirsty? Do you want something to drink?

Alan: You didn't answer my question. Has something happened to A.J.?

Emily: Yeah.

Alan: Tell me.

Emily: We can talk about it later. Dad, right now --

Alan: Look, if something has gone on with his injuries, we could fly in a specialist. And it's important that we do something quickly, you know, before it gets worse.

Emily: That's not going to happen.

Alan: No, you're wrong. Whatever the crisis is, A.J. -- he'll come through it.

Emily: Dad, he's gone.

Alan: He could have been anything he wanted. Could have been a doctor like his parents or a businessman like his grandfather. He had the whole world in front of him. He couldn't find any happiness.

Emily: Dad, it was A.J.'s life. You couldn't live it for him.

Alan: I could've done better. I could have praised him more or forgiven him more quickly. I should have made sure that he knew how deeply I loved him.

Emily: A.J. knew how much you loved him.

Alan: Yeah?

Monica: You know?

Alan: Uh-huh. Our boy's gone. We just got him back, and now he's gone forever.

Monica: He had such a painful life. I hope he's found some peace.

Alan: Were you with him at the end?

Monica: Uh, I think he -- he died in his sleep. Steven tried to revive him, but it was too late. After it was over, I -- I was alone with him. I looked down at his face, and for the first time in years, it was calm. The mouth didn't have that -- that sneer. Know what I did? I kissed him good night, just like when he was a little boy. And that's the way I'm going to remember him. He was just our beautiful boy, and he's finally at rest.
