Nikolas is reading some papers, standing at his desk. Knock, Knock
Nikolas: Emily!
Nikolas smiles widely.
Emily: Mrs. Lansbury let me in. I hope I'm not interrupting.
They have a big hug.
Nikolas: No, no, no. This is the best interruption, I've had in months. I'm so glad to see you.
Emily: I finally heard that you were out of town.
Nikolas: Yeah I...I just got back. Is everything okay?
Emily has tears rolling down her face.
Emily: Not really. Um.. I..I need you to be a friend. Big time.
Nikolas: Okay.
Emily: You have to promise me that you will listen and not judge me or freak out or feel sorry for me.
Nikolas: Emily, what is is?
Emily: I have cancer.
Nikolas and Emily sitting on the couch.
Emily: I couldn't face it at first. I could barely even say the word cancer.
Nikolas: Who've you told?
Emily: Mom and Dad.
Nikolas: What about Zander?
Emily: He can't know. I don't want to put him through this. Okay, whatever happens. I just...if the worst happens-
Nikolas: It won't happen
Emily: It's okay Nikolas, you don't have to say that.
Nikolas: I mean it, Emily. You are strong, you have an excellent chance of beating this.
Emily: Yeah. that's what it is. It's a chance. I've tried to tell Zander the truth but I can't. Whatever happens, I won't make him watch me go through this.
Emily gets up and is pacing. Nikolas gets up and joins her.
Nikolas: Emily. You know I never really liked the guy, but I know you love him and he loves you.
Emily: Look, I have thought about this from every angle and I have decided that it is best to let Zander go.
Nikolas: Don't you think that he's gonna want to fight you on that?
Emily: Not if you pretend to be in love with me.
