Emily Bowen-Quartermaine first appeared on General Hospital in the beginning of 1995. Emily, an orphan from Phoenix, moved into the Quartermaine mansion after her mother, Paige, passed away from a battle with breast cancer. Paige and Monica had gotten close and became friends in Phoenix while Monica was recovering from her cancer battle. After befriending Lucky Spencer, Emily and Lucky ran away from Port Charles in search of Emily's biological aunt and Lucky's parents with the hope of reuniting them. After an unsuccessful search, they returned to Port Charles where Emily was officially adopted by the Quartermaines.
Emily's new life became too much for her to handle so she turned to drugs and alcohol after hooking up with a classmate, Matt. When Matt overdosed, Emily realized the trouble she was in, but not before professing her love to her teenage crush, Nikolas Cassadine. Nikolas didn't reciprocate Emily's feelings which caused her to spiral down even more. At one point, Emily believed that she could fly from a roof while high. After an overdose of drugs the Quartermaines sent Emily to Italy to detox and have a "rest".
When Emily returned from Italy, things seemed to be back to normal, until one night outside of Luke's, Nikolas was shot in the throat. While Nikolas was recovering Emily was one of the only people Nikolas would allow to help him. She sat by his side as he attempted to regain his voice, reading to him from page 243, her favorite passage, of "Captain of My Dreams". During this time Nikolas and Emily became good friends. and they hung out at Wyndemere, talking and dreaming. Their time spent together soon came to an end, however, when a very jealous Sarah Webber went to the Quartermaine's and told them about her "concerns" of Nikolas and Emily being together alone. Sarah is Emily's best friend, Elizabeth's sister. After Sarah's visit, the Quartermaines forbade Emily from spending time with Nikolas.
As Nikolas and Emily's friendship evolved, Emily started a modelling career after becoming close to Brenda Barrett. All was well until Emily began to receive pictures of her head attached to bodies of naked women. As Emily was blackmailed; she turned to her best friends, Elizabeth, Lucky and Nikolas for help in trapping the blackmailer. It all came to a head when Tom Baker, the blackmailer, held Emily and Elizabeth hostage, in his photography studio. It came out then that he was the one responsible for Liz's rape in the park on the previous Valentines Day. Though there wasn't enough to convict him for the rape, the four musketeers were happy to see him sent to prison for the hostage situation.
The four were inseparable after that until Emily met Juan Santiago who became her first true boyfriend. Juan, the biological son of Lily Rivera Corinthos and Miguel Morez, was a talented singer/songwriter who Emily pushed to pursue a career at L&B records with her cousin, Ned. Emily and Juan began dating and waged a war to stay together against the Quartermaines and Juan's adoptive father's objections. Life was good until after the Nurse's Ball in 2000. Juan had been invited to a rave party which the Four Musketeers went to with him. While at the rave, Emily and Juan had a huge fight and after catching Juan kissing another girl, Emily unknowingly drank a drugged beer. When she woke up, she had a drug needle in her hand and there was a dead guy lying next to her. Emily freaked but was calmed by Lucky who had tracked Emily down....the Four Musketeers hid the body of the guy in a freezer in the basement of Wyndemere, Nikolas' estate.
Emily's next problem was being blackmailed by Gia Campbell who said she knew what had happened at the rave. The boys found out that Gia was Lieutenant Taggart's sister and threatened Gia with telling Taggart that his sister was in town unless she stopped the blackmailing. They worked with Gia to find out who had set her up, a teenager by the name of Zander Smith. After this they found out that the dead guy, Ted, had been an undercover police officer. Unbeknownst to all of them, it was Joseph Sorel that had killed Ted. The teens decided to plant Ted's body in Zander's car at the next rave. All was going as planned until Zander got scared at the rave when the police showed up and he grabbed Emily at gunpoint and dragged her away.
After a few unsuccessful escape attempts, Emily began to see that Zander wasn't all bad, he was just caught in a tough situation. She believed him when he explained that Sorel had killed Ted and agreed to stay with him until he got to safety at the Canadian border. When they finally arrived at the border, Lucky, Liz, and Emily's brother, Jason Morgan showed up. Emily pleaded with Jason to let him go and not turn him in, and since Zander hadn't hurt her, Jason agreed. Zander and Emily met up again in Port Charles, a few days after this incident and Zander asked Emily to run away with him for real. Emily was tempted but she couldn't. She did however, convince Zander to turn himself into the PCPD. That idea was ruined when Lucky and Nikolas attacked Zander in the park and Zander was subsequently arrested. Emily's ex, Juan, began to get jealous and swore that he wanted Emily back. Caught at a crossroad, Emily chose Zander in the end which ended her relationship with Juan.
Things became heated when the mob violence between Sorel and Sonny Corinthos began to erupt. Zander and Emily were caught in the middle and Emily moved out of the Quartermaine mansion after being disgusted with the way they were handling everything. On a special night, Emily lost her virginity to Zander when they decided to leave town. On leaving town, the train they boarded was involved in a severe crash and Emily was paralyzed from the waist down. Zander realized that Emily was so wrapped up in his problems and her devotion to him that she wouldn't be able to focus on her recovery. Soon after this realization she left for a rehab facility and eventually began going to Stanford University. During her time out of Port Charles, Zander broke up with Emily, Liz and Lucky were together at certain times and Nikolas had become involved and eventually engaged to Gia.
Emily returned to Port Charles with a secret hanging over her and turned to her friend, Nikolas for his help. The story now leads into the love story of Nikolas and Emily....
